Ivins, UT (August 30, 2022) – A 12-year-old girl was injured after she was hit by the driver of a pick-up truck just before sun-up on Tuesday, August 30th.

According to police, at about 6:30 a.m., the driver of a Dodge Dakota was traveling southbound along 100 West near the Center Street Fire Station. As the driver attempted to make a lefthand turn onto Center Street, he struck the girl as she was crossing the street on her way to the bus stop.

The driver of the pick-up was unharmed during the incident.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.

The Utah Highway Safety Office noted that the state’s pedestrian accident rate has risen every single year for the last decade, with 2012 marking the height of these avoidable incidents. In Utah, an estimated 30 pedestrians are hit and killed by negligent drivers each year. An additional 800 will require a visit to a hospital emergency room and, potentially, a lengthy hospital stay to receive treatment for their injuries.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration calculated that a pedestrian is injured during contact with a vehicle every eight minutes and a pedestrian is killed every two hours nationwide.
