Today, we want to discuss a recent tragic crash that took the life of a 4-year-old boy. Police have arrested one person on suspicion of DUI.

This was a tragic and avoidable incident

A recent crash in Salt Lake City has left a 4-year-old boy dead. The incident occurred near 900 West and California Ave at around 11 a.m. Police say that a driver, Carl Wayne Johnson, 46, struck the boy and his mother.

The boy, identified by family members as Holden Curtis, suffered severe injuries and died at the scene. His mother sustained serious leg injuries.

Johnson was arrested for automobile homicide, a second-degree felony, and DUI with serious bodily injury, a third-degree felony, as well as other charges. Officer said they noticed a strong odor of alcohol on Johnson’s breath as well as other signs of impairment.

One witness to the crash said that this is a dangerous intersection, especially since the city reduced two lanes into one.

What are the statistics for these crashes?

During the latest reporting year in Utah, we know that there were nearly 2,000 alcohol-related driver crashes in the state. Out of those, 1,220 people were injured, and 36 people were killed.

When we look at pedestrian incidents from that same year, we see that there were 1,006 pedestrians struck by vehicles. 898 people were injured, and 39 people were killed.

Anytime a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle, there is a high probability that they will sustain an injury or be killed. We saw this in the story mentioned above. It is not uncommon for our Salt Lake City pedestrian accident lawyers to help clients suffering from the following:

  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Bone fractures and dislocations
  • Loss of or damage to a bodily organ
  • Dismemberment or amputation
  • Other injuries that inhibit a person’s daily activities
  • Significant disfigurement

Pedestrian crashes with an impaired driver tend to be more severe because these drivers often operate at high rates of speed.
