St. George, UT – Elderly Woman Injured In Car Crash At Sunset Corner

St. George, UT (May 10, 2022) – A two-vehicle accident involving a driver failing to yield before making a lefthand turn left an elderly woman with injuries on Sunday, May 8th.

The collision, which involved a pick-up truck and a Dodge Ram, took place at about 7:00 p.m. on Bluff Street in front of the Sunset Corner Megaplex shopping center.

An officer with the St. George Police Department reported that a female driver received a citation for failing to yield on a left turn.

The officer also confirmed that an elderly female was transported to a nearby hospital with trauma to both of her legs.

Paramedics were dispatched to the scene in the 1000th block of North Bluff Street, between Sunset Boulevard and 1250 North. The conscious injured party was loaded onto a stretcher and into an ambulance.

The medics also evaluated a teenage boy at the scene, but he appeared to be unharmed.

The pick-up’s front side was caved in, and all side and front airbags were deployed. The Dodge Ram sustained damage to its back bumper.

St. George Police responded to the accident, as did St. George Fire, the Washington County Sheriff, and Gold Cross Ambulance.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.

Failing to yield the right of way is one of the leading causes of car accidents nationwide. A report issued by a private company that studies collision data provided by insurance companies shows that failure to yield is the fourth most frequent cause of deadly accidents, after speeding, driving while intoxicated, and failing to maintain the proper lane.

When drivers fail to yield, it can cause multiple kinds of serious collisions, including side-impact and head-on collisions. Failing to yield at a crosswalk also leads to dangerous accidents involving bicyclists and pedestrians. These groups are especially vulnerable because they lack exterior protections of any kind.

There are a lot of reasons why one driver might disregard another’s right of way. The ones that occur most often in Utah include:

      • Distracted Driving: When a driver is distracted by something outside or inside their vehicle and, as a result, they fail to pay attention to the roadway, they could disregard the right of way of others. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that distracted driving is any action that redirects someone’s attention away from driving, like texting or talking on your phone, drinking or eating, talking to passengers, or using the stereo.
      • Driving Under the Influence:Alcohol reduces your reaction time and impairs your judgment. A driver who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs could fail to yield to pedestrians or other cars. There are also certain prescription medications that can hinder someone’s ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
      • Drowsy Driving:When a driver is severely fatigued or overly tired, they might not have the capacity to give their undivided attention to their surroundings. They are also less likely to correctly judge distances and might fail to notice that another driver has the right of way.
