Garden City, UT (May 22, 2022) – A tractor-trailer crashed in a town near the Idaho-Utah border on Tuesday, May 17th after failing to successfully negotiate the T-intersection at Bear Lake Boulevard and U.S. Highway 89 just outside of Garden City.
At about 6:00 a.m., the tractor-trailer was traveling toward Garden City from Logan Canyon when, according to an officer from the Utah Highway Patrol, a possible brake malfunction resulted in an accident.
The truck operator said that his brakes were working fine near the runaway ramp, a $3.4 million cable system situated about a mile from the intersection, but they suddenly felt soft and spongy a half-mile down the road. An official on the scene confirmed that those are common characteristics of overheated brake pads.
The truck, which was transporting roughly 40,000 pounds of bottled water, attempted to make a lefthand turn at the intersection, but the truck rolled on its side and slid to an uncontrolled stop without hitting any buildings in the area. Earlier crashes at the same intersection have resulted in serious damage to roadside businesses.
Only minor injuries were reported during the incident. This accident marked at least the sixth one of its kind at the intersection in the last several years.
