Salt Lake City, UT (May 31, 2022) – One resident was killed and two more sustained injuries after an overnight fire at an apartment complex in Salt Lake City on Monday, May 30th.
Two of the building’s residents were transported to an area hospital, one in serious condition, the other critical. The rest of the building’s occupants were displaced.
At about 2:00 a.m., the Salt Lake City Fire Department responded to reports of a fire at the Silverado Apartments in the 200th block of 300 East.
Reports show that three firefighters also received non-critical injuries in the performance of their duties. One was hospitalized with an exertion injury, one sustained an injury to his ankle, and one endured minor hand trauma.
Officials said that the cause of the fire was accidental but did not elaborate.
Others who live in the immediate area reported hearing a small blast, followed by a much larger one that shook the entire block.
Authorities have declined to confirm if it was an explosion, and, if so, whether it had anything to do with the fire.
The fire was brought under control by 8:30 a.m. and the roadway was reopened.
The Red Cross aided the displaced residents.
