Brian Head, UT – Two Critical After OHV Drops 40 Feet Off Second Left Hand Rd

Brian Head, UT (August 22, 2022) – Two people were left with critical injuries after an off-highway vehicle crashed on an ATV trail in the mountains between Brian Head and Parowan on Sunday, August 21st.

According to the Iron County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, the incident occurred at about 3:00 p.m. on Second Left Hand Road and involved a single four-wheeler with a male driver and a female passenger.

The OHV struck a large rock, causing the handlebars to be yanked from the driver’s hands, making him unable to bring the vehicle to a stop before falling off the trail’s edge. The vehicle landed at the bottom of a 40-foot embankment.

A Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter extracted both people from the scene. They were transported to Cedar City Hospital with critical injuries. From the top of the canyon, a Classic Air medical helicopter transferred the driver to St. George Regional Hospital.

Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.

The extreme nature of many ATV collision injuries usually leaves victims with pricey medical bills, a lengthy recovery period during which they are unable to work, and, in severe cases, lifelong disabilities that will require ongoing care, robbing the victim of their independence.

More than 180 ATV accidents were reported in Utah in 2016. These accidents left 127 victims seriously injured and caused the deaths of 24 more. Being operated at dangerously high speeds is the main cause of ATV accidents.

When an all-terrain vehicle overturns, its open-air design leaves the occupants especially vulnerable to injuries.

ATV accidents often cause their victims to endure serious injuries, including:

  • Brain injuries/Head injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries/Back Injuries
  • Neck injuries
  • Broken bones
  • Fatalities
  • Paralysis
