This Is a Tragic Story

We have learned that a 41-year-old man and his 9-year-old daughter have been seriously hurt in a crash while riding a motorcycle recently. The incident involved four vehicles and began when the driver of a Subaru ran a red light at 400 South. The driver then struck the motorcycle in the intersection, pushing them into another vehicle.

Thankfully, both the father and daughter were wearing helmets. The father sustained a head injury and leg injuries while the daughter sustained leg injuries. Both are expected to survive.

The driver of the Subaru is under investigation for impaired driving.

What Can Happen?

We know that motorcyclists are at more risk of injury than those in regular passenger vehicles. They do not have the same level of protection. As you saw in the story above, even wearing a helmet cannot prevent injuries. It is not uncommon for us to see the following injuries as a result of motorcycle crashes:

  • Spinal cord trauma (possible paralysis)
  • Head injuries/traumatic brain injuries
  • Internal organ damage or internal bleeding
  • Broken or dislocated bones
  • Severe lacerations or road rash

Each of these injuries required emergency medical treatment and many of them will see a victim needing extensive recovery periods. The medical costs for treating these injuries can be tremendous, but that is only part of the overall costs. Other hidden accident costs can burden a family. These costs include lost income if a victim cannot work, any necessary home or vehicle accommodations, as well as any emotional or psychological damages.

For the latest reporting year in Utah, there were over 1,000 motorcycle crash injuries and 41 fatalities. In many of those crashes, the negligence of other drivers was to blame.
