What Happened In This Salt Lake Case?

We have learned that a driver was arrested recently after a chain-reaction crash that sent one police officer to the hospital. Authorities say that the officer was stopped in a driveway next to the Harley Davidson shop near 2900 South and State Street using his radar to check speeds.

A passerby parked next to the officer to have a conversation when a red pickup truck came barreling down State Street at a high rate of speed. The officer dove out of the way as the truck crashed into a fire hydrant and then struck a light pole which fell and hit the officer.

The officer went to check on the driver, but the man had already fled the scene on foot. Other responding officers were able to arrest him several blocks away. Both the driver and the motorcycle officer were treated at the hospital for minor injuries.

What We Know About Salt Lake City Car Accidents?

State government sources say that there were over 62,000 Utah car accidents reported during the latest reporting year. Out of those, there were:

  • 26,738 Utah car accident injuries
  • 281 Utah car accident deaths

When it comes to why these crashes occur, the data tells us that:

  • 8 were due to a failure to yield
  • 9 were due to speeding
  • 1 were due to distracted driving
  • 7 were due to alcohol-impaired drivers

While the number of crashes involving alcohol-impaired driver may seem low, we want to point out that these incidents are responsible for a disproportionate number of fatal incidents. 12.8 of the total traffic fatalities during the latest year were caused by alcohol-impaired drivers.

Any time the carelessness or negligence of another driver causes an injury, they should be held accountable for their actions.
