Orem, UT (October 31, 2021) – One person was killed and another severely injured when their car was hit by a pick-up truck while it was stopped in the emergency lane on Interstate 15 on Sunday, October 31st in Orem.
Sources reported that, at about 12:05 a.m., a Kia was stopped in the righthand, southbound emergency lane of I-15 near the exit for 800 North in Orem when a Toyota pick-up truck drifted into the emergency lane and crashed into the stopped vehicle.
The Kia’s passenger was killed on impact. The driver was taken by ambulance to a local trauma center in serious, life-threatening condition.
The driver of the Toyota was unharmed during the crash and was later arrested for possible DUI.
Four lanes of the interstate were shut down while UHP investigated the accident.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family in hopes of a full recovery.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published that one person was killed by a drunk driver every 48 minutes in 2017, indicating that 10,874 people died in alcohol-related car accidents that year. This represents 29% of all traffic fatalities in the United States. These totals were nearly identical to totals from 2016, which, at that time, had not been that low since 1985.
In 2018 and 2019, the rate of arrests for driving under the influence dropped by 4%. The largest portion of these drivers were arrested in Davis, Salt Lake, Weber, and Utah counties, accounting for 70% of the state’s drunk driving arrests. Every remaining county outside of Wasatch Front combined comprised just 30% of Utah’s drunk driving accidents, a total that is disproportionate to the region’s population.
No different than other kinds of car accidents, liability on the part of the intoxicated driver must be proven in order for you to receive financial compensation for your losses. Losses in a DUI claim include both economic and non-economic. In a very limited number of cases, punitive damages can also be pursued because the driver exhibited gross negligence in their decision to drive drunk.
When injuries are sustained during a crash due to another party’s negligence, victims should immediately seek legal guidance from an accident attorney in Orem. Anytime somebody is harmed and another person was the cause of that harm, they are able to receive financial compensation for their damages and losses.
