Salt Lake City, UT (August 07, 2021) – A 26-year-old driver died when an alleged drunk driver drove into oncoming traffic on Interstate 15 and crashed head-on into her car in the early morning hours of Saturday, August 7th.
According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the accident took place at about 1:10 a.m.
An official from the department said that the victim was driving a Toyota Corolla when the wrong-way motorist, driving a Toyota Tacoma, entered the interstate at 900 South in Salt Lake City and proceeded to travel southbound in the northbound lanes.
The woman died at the scene. The other occupant of the Corolla, as well as the two occupants of the Tacoma, all survived. There is no word on their condition.
Immediately following the crash, a third vehicle pulled over to assist at the scene and the driver of the Tacoma stole their car and attempted to flee.
Troopers soon apprehended the male suspect and he was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI, manslaughter, and car theft.
The freeway was partly shut down for about five hours while troopers conducted their investigation.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time.

In 2018 and 2019, the rate of arrests for drunk and drugged drivers fell by 4%. The largest percentage of these drivers were arrested in Davis, Salt Lake, Weber, and Utah counties, making up 70% of the state’s drunk driving arrests. Every remaining county outside of Wasatch Front added together comprised just 30% of Utah’s drunk driving crashes, a figure that is disproportionate to the region’s population.
