Virgin River Gorge, UT (May 07, 2021) – On Wednesday, May 5th, police officers responded to a crash scene where a driver was lucky to be alive after being sideswiped by a tractor-trailer as she stepped out of her disabled vehicle.
The accident took place at about 3:40 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 15 near the Arizona/Utah border.
Upon their arrival, troopers located a badly injured woman, who appeared to be in her early 20s, lying on the ground about 50 feet away from the car. She had extensive road rash on her hands and arms, a large laceration on the back of her head, swelling to her face, leg and ankle injuries, a fractured foot, multiple contusions, and was bleeding heavily.
She was able to explain that she and her boyfriend were traveling together when their car ran out of gas and came to a stop in the middle of the interstate. As she attempted to exit the vehicle, presumably to push it onto the shoulder, she was hit by a tractor-trailer. The impact threw her more than 30 feet.
A trooper reported finding a few large, broken lug nuts at the scene that appeared to be from the wheel of a tractor-trailer, along with paint transfer on the side of the victim’s car.
She was transported to St. George Regional Hospital for emergency medical treatment for multiple injuries. She was also found to have head trauma, a collapsed lung, and a concussion.
