Ogden, UT (August 03, 2021) – A teenager was arrested after his street racing resulted in a four-vehicle collision at a busy intersection in Ogden while attempting to flee from police.
18-year-old Karmen Wade Mestas was arrested for failing to respond to an officer’s signals to pull over, causing an injury accident, reckless driving, and exhibition driving.
According to a police booking affidavit, on Saturday, July 31st, at about 9:30 p.m., police in the area of Washington Boulevard and 22nd Street observed a Honda Civic being recklessly operated. The car took from a group of cars at a high rate of speed and the driver seemed to be showing off in front of the other drivers and racing.
When officers tried to pull Mestas over, he fled, running two red lights. The second red light was at the intersection of Washington Boulevard and 20th Street, where Mestas’ actions caused a four-car accident.
The teenage passenger in the front seat of the Honda sustained a concussion and facial lacerations.
An officer on the scene said the passenger was struggling to remember things and keep up with the conversation, proving that “Not only did this incident pose a significant risk of serious bodily injury or death, but the passenger also appears to be suffering from several different forms of serious disfigurement.”
Mestas received minor injuries and was booked into the Weber County Jail.
