Without the safety of a metal cage, or, in actuality, any safety features whatsoever, to shield them from the impending impact, pedestrian injuries are often followed by severe economic, emotional, and physical ramifications.
In the state of Utah, there are several local regulations as well as state laws that regulate when and how pedestrians are able to use the roadways. These regulations are formulated with the safety of those on foot in mind.
If a pedestrian is inside a crosswalk, the onus of responsibility is placed on drivers to slow down and yield the right of way. Although intersections are considered pedestrian areas, not every intersection has a marked crosswalk. An intersection is supposed to be a safe and suitable place for a pedestrian to cross the roadway.
Some intersections, however, such as ones with above-average speed limits, in large cities or other highly-populated areas, are usually equipped with bridges or skyways that offer safe passage for those on scooters, bicycles, and on foot.
Due to the significant difference between the weight and size of a motor vehicle and the weight and size of a body, motor vehicles are required to defer to pedestrians under almost any circumstances.
