A pedestrian is any person walking by the side of the road or in a developed area. Essentially, a pedestrian is anybody going from one place to another on foot, even if all they are doing walking across a parking lot between their car and a store. In the state of Utah, there are several local regulations as well as state laws that regulate when and how pedestrians are able to use the roadways. These regulations are formulated with the safety of those on foot in mind.

Although intersections are considered pedestrian areas, not every intersection has a marked crosswalk. An intersection is supposed to be a safe and suitable place for a pedestrian to cross the roadway. Some intersections, however, such as ones with above-average speed limits, in large cities or other highly-populated areas, are usually equipped with bridges or skyways that offer safe passage for those on scooters, on bicycles, and on foot.

If a pedestrian is inside a crosswalk, the onus of responsibility is placed on drivers to slow down and yield the right of way. Due to the significant difference between the weight and size of a motor vehicle and the weight and size of a body, motor vehicles are required to defer to pedestrians under almost any circumstances.

When taking into account the excessive rise in Utah’s distracted driving demographic, a lot of drivers either fail to give any credence to the role they play in pedestrian safety or fail to notice them altogether. In their rush to get to the post office, football practice, or barely scrape through a yellow traffic light, drivers routinely speed through crosswalks, putting Utah’s most defenseless residents, pedestrians, in extreme danger. Pedestrians that are struck by motor vehicles typically endure myriad injuries with catastrophic, and sometimes deadly, outcomes.

Without the safety of a metal cage, or, in actuality, any safety features whatsoever, to shield them from the impending impact, pedestrian injuries are often followed by severe economic, emotional, and physical ramifications.

When you are represented by a reputable pedestrian injury lawyer following your accident, your odds of receiving full economic recovery are considerably greater than those of someone attempting to represent themselves.
