West Valley City, UT – Drunk Driver Causes Death Of Ana Maria Ypanaque At 4100 South And 4000 West

West Valley City, UT (August 12, 2022) – A man with a blood-alcohol level three times the legal limit was arrested after he caused a three-car accident that left one woman dead in West Valley City on Friday, August 5th. 

35-year-old Jaime Eduardo Cartagena was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for DUI, investigation of negligently operating a vehicle resulting in death, reckless driving, negligently operating a vehicle causing serious injury, possession of drug paraphernalia, drug possession, and having an open container in a vehicle.

At about 7:20 p.m., Cartagena was driving along 4100 South in the area of 4000 West when he veered into oncoming traffic and struck a vehicle head-on as it attempted to make a lefthand turn. 

The impact from the crash pushed the struck vehicle into a third car. Eyewitness accounts indicate that Cartagena was traveling at roughly 80 miles an hour when he struck the vehicle waiting to turn. 

86-year-old Ana Maria Ypanaque, a passenger in the turning vehicle, died during the collision. Another victim sustained serious injuries including fractured bones in their foot, legs, and spine.
