Provo, UT – Two Drivers Critical Following T-Bone Collision On Hwy 189 Near Vivian Park

Provo, UT (August 22, 2022) – Two people were hospitalized with critical injuries after a car accident on Sunday, August 21st in Provo Canyon.

The Utah Department of Public Safety said the crash took place at about 7:45 p.m. on Highway 189 in the area of Vivian Park.

A Toyota Camry was entering US-189 from Vivian Park. As it pulled out, it was struck on the passenger’s side by an eastbound Nissan Rogue.

The male driver of the Toyota and the female driver of the Nissan were both transported to an area hospital in critical condition.

A third vehicle in the area was struck by debris from the collision but the driver was unharmed.

Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.

While all kinds of accidents can happen in an intersection, one of the most serious is a broadside collision. Often referred to as being T-boned, these dangerous crashes take place when the front end of one car crashes into the side of another. T-bone and other side-impact accidents caused the deaths of 1,770 vehicle occupants in 2017.

As cited in an in-depth study directed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2,307,000 car accidents took place at intersections in 2008, accounting for 40%  of all motor vehicle accidents nationwide.

In that same year, Utah’s 58 fatal intersection accidents constituted 21.2% of its car accident-related deaths, marking a 6.5% drop when compared to 2016.

This indicates that almost half of the nation’s car crashes occur at intersections.
