Car crashes happen daily in Utah. The most frequent causes of these accidents include:
- Speeding: Exceeding the speed limit is the main cause of deadly car accidents in Utah. In 2016, over 11,500 accidents caused by speeding took place throughout the state and resulted in over 100 deaths. To ensure you are driving your vehicle as safely as possible, you should always obey the posted speed limit and take road and traffic conditions into consideration.
- Not Wearing a Seat Belt: Although seat belts have repeatedly demonstrated that they save lives, many state residents just can’t be bothered. Motorists who were not buckled up when their accident happened made up half of all car accident deaths in the summer of 2016, and 50% of all deadly accidents from June to August of that same year. Passengers and drivers who are not properly restrained are 25 times more likely to die in a crash.
- Distracted Drivers: Distracted driving is the number one source of traffic accidents nationwide. Police have indicated that the issue of distracted driving is far more pervasive than records indicate because drivers are naturally reluctant to admit they were not paying attention to the roadway and the difficulties inherent in determining the cause of a crash.
