Franklin, UT (March 23, 2021) – An unexplained explosion that took place while a man was attempting to relight his furnace ignited a fire that destroyed most of a home on Maple Creek Road on Tuesday, March 22nd in Franklin County.
Emergency responders and firefighters were dispatched to the Womack home in the 4500 block of East Maple Creek Road at about 12:30 p.m. Scott Womack was transported to an area trauma center with first and second-degree burns.
Sources reported that the home’s propane tank had recently been refilled, and Womack was attempting to reignite the water furnace when it exploded. The blast propelled him out of the mechanical room and all the way into the garage. It also ripped off the steel doors from the room into both the garage and the house, flattened one wall of the room, and blew the garage door off.
Womack sustained first- and second-degree burns to his neck, face, and hands.
The fire marshall stated that what caused the explosion remains a mystery at this point.
