West Valley City, UT (October 16, 2020) – A pregnant woman died in an accident on Thursday, October 15th, when an 18-year-old ran a red light and collided with a motor vehicle in which she was a passenger.
As reported by officials, the accident took place at about 7:00 p.m. in the 3500 block of South Bangerter Highway.
Police reports show that the pregnant woman and her 28-year-old husband were driving westbound along 3500 South in a 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer. As they made their way through the intersection an 18-year-old male driving a 2016 Subaru Forester southbound on Bangerter Highway ran a red light, colliding with the passenger side of the Mitsubishi.
The Mitsubishi’s passenger, Shelby Boyce, 29, a resident of West Valley City who was 8 months pregnant took the majority of the impact.
A police officer who happened to be at the intersection when the accident occurred immediately checked on everyone involved. He reported that Boyce was trapped inside the vehicle but first responders were able to safely extricate her. She was then transported to a nearby trauma center in extremely critical condition.
In spite of the many life-saving measures that were taken, Boyce was pronounced dead at the hospital a short while later. Physicians safely delivered the baby via Cesarean section. The newborn girl was then airlifted to another hospital in order to receive specialized medical care.
The current medical condition of the infant is unknown.
The drivers of both vehicles were transported via ambulance to local hospitals with injuries that were classified as minor.
At this time, drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the accident, which is still under investigation by local law enforcement.
