DUI Accidents in Utah
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published that one person was killed by a drunk driver every 48 minutes in 2017, indicating that 10,874 people died in alcohol-related car accidents that year. This represents 29% of all traffic fatalities in the United States. These totals were nearly identical to totals from 2016, which, at that time, had not been that low since 1985.
In 2018 and 2019, the rate of arrests for driving under the influence dropped by 4%. The largest portion of these drivers were arrested in Davis, Salt Lake, Weber, and Utah counties, accounting for 70% of the state’s drunk driving arrests. Every remaining county outside of Wasatch Front combined comprised just 30% of Utah’s drunk driving accidents, a total that is disproportionate to the region’s population.
No different than other kinds of car accidents, liability on the part of the intoxicated driver must be proven in order for you to receive financial compensation for your losses. Losses in a DUI claim include both economic and non-economic. In a very limited number of cases, punitive damages can also be pursued because the driver exhibited gross negligence in their decision to drive drunk.
