Magna, UT – Three Injured In Accident Caused By Gravel Spill On SR-201

Magna, UT (December 05, 2021) – Three people sustained serious injuries on Saturday, December 4th after their SUV swerved and overturned when a load of gravel spilled on State Route 201.

The accident took place at about 12:50 p.m. in the area of milepost 4, just outside of Magna.

According to sources, a truck owned by a cement or concrete company was hauling a load of gravel which, for reasons still under investigation, dropped onto the roadway during transport. The spill forced the driver of a Nissan Xterra to swerve and then overcorrect, which caused the vehicle to roll.

The three occupants of the Nissan were all transported to an area hospital with injuries classified as serious but non-life-threatening.

Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.

Truck Accidents in Utah

Truck accidents are often caused by negligence on the part of the trucking company. These include overloaded or overweight trailers, faulty truck parts, poor or no maintenance, inadequate driver training, speeding, or other bad driving habits. When mixed with inclement weather, poor road conditions, and overtaxed drivers who are extremely fatigued, the chance for an accident is high.

In 2001, the Utah Highway Safety Office said there were a total of 2, 884 accidents involving trucks. Over 800 of these accidents caused victim injuries and 36 of them resulted in fatalities. 2010 saw a radical rise in those numbers, with more than 500,000 truck accidents taking place throughout the year. These accidents left more than 100,000 victims to bear critical injuries, and just over 5000 victims dead.

Between 1992 and 2002, the rate of fatal truck crashes rose by 10%. These preventable accidents were caused mainly by avoidable circumstances such as driver fatigue, unsafe truck operation, oversized and unbalanced payloads, and faulty equipment. Accidents involving large commercial trucks are also subject to the same causative factors as other vehicles, including driver exhaustion, drunk driving, driver mistakes, equipment malfunctions, and improper maintenance.
