Hurricane, UT (August 03, 2021) – On Tuesday, August 3rd, a collision involving five vehicles was caused by a driver who failed to stop in time to avoid crashing into multiple vehicles on State Route 9.
This accident, which put two people in the hospital and left several vehicles completely totaled, took place at about 10:00 a.m. at the intersection of State Route 9 and North 3700 West in Hurricane.
Hurricane Police Officers stated that preliminary reports led them to believe that there was a driver trapped inside of his Ford Thunderbird. Upon their arrival, responders discovered a Toyota pick-up truck balancing on top of the Thunderbird. It was also partially wedged on top of a charcoal-colored passenger car.
The driver of the Thunderbird required extrication by fire crews. After he was freed from the wreckage, he was transported by paramedics to St. George Regional Hospital for evaluation and treatment.
A passenger in one of the other vehicles was also injured and transported to hospital by ambulance.
The accident initially obstructed the intersection as the vehicles came to a stop in the middle of the roadway.
At the time of the crash, there were four westbound vehicles all stopped at a red light at the intersection of State Route 9 and 3700 West, with the Toyota bringing up the rear.
That is when the Thunderbird crashed into the Toyota with enough force to push the truck into the passenger car in front of it, while the Thunderbird was crushed underneath the truck, starting a chain reaction accident, as the impact propelled each of the vehicles forward into the vehicle in front of it.
The impact also left debris scattered across the roadway.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
