Stay Home, Stay Safe In Utah For Coronavirus – But Be Careful On The Roadway

The outbreak of coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, has changed the way most people in this country live their lives on a day-to-day basis. Most of the US is under some sort of “shelter in place” order, though this varies from state to state. While most places have seen a reduction in traffic and traffic accidents, that does not mean that drivers should not be careful when they do leave the house. The effects of COVID-19 stay at home orders

Governor Gary Herbert has issued a “Stay Safe, Stay Home” directive for the state of Utah in an effort to slow the spread of coronavirus. The order, while not a shelter in place, asks that all residents stay at home as much as possible and practice social distancing when in public. As COVID-19 deaths continue to mount around this country, this order may be extended or could become a more strict stay at home order for Utah residents. 

These orders have significantly reduced traffic, both in Utah and around the rest of the United States. Instances of car accidents are significantly lower, but we have a warning for drivers – do not be lulled into a false sense of security when you do have to go out. 

To be clear, there are many reasons that residents of Salt Lake City still have to get out. This can include going to the grocery store, going to a doctor’s office, going to the bank, and more. However, many drivers may take fewer precautions because there are fewer vehicles out. 

All Salt Lake City drivers need to practice defensive driving at all times. This includes:

• Putting down phones and other devices that can cause distractions. 
• Being aware of bicyclists and pedestrians who are out exercising.

• Using turn signals when changing lanes or making a turn. 
• Not operating while impaired by alcohol or drugs. 
• Not following other drivers too closely.
