Driving while distracted is the leading cause of auto crashes. Law enforcement has pointed out that the issue of distracted driving is a much larger problem than statistics show.

Common types of distracted driving include:

  • Making phone calls and sending texts
  • Drinking, eating, personal grooming
  • Programming your GPS or stereo
  • Sleep deprivation

Additionally, data has shown that teen drivers are more likely to be involved in auto accidents. Although the number of car accidents involving teenage drivers is fairly consistent year-round, the total number of fatalities almost doubles in May and June.

Driving too fast is one of the top three causes of car accidents, along with drunk driving and distracted driving. Over 11,000 crashes involving speeding drivers took place within the state in 2016, cutting short more than 100 lives.

To make sure that you are driving your car as safely as possible, always follow the speed limit and take road and traffic conditions into account.
