West Valley City, UT (July 12, 2022) – Four firefighters and the already-injured patient they were assisting are hospitalized after being hurt in a construction site accident on Monday, July 11th in West Valley City.
The incident took place as firefighters were trying to rescue a worker who had been injured during a fall at a job site, located at 4100 South and 1770 West.
As members of the West Valley City Fire Department were carrying the victim down a staircase, it collapsed underneath them injuring all four firemen and causing further injury to the patient.
One of the emergency responders, a 36-year-old fire captain who also works as a paramedic, was med-flighted to a regional trauma center with multiple bone breaks and various other injuries.
All victims were still hospitalized as of Tuesday afternoon.
The initial injury was sustained by a woman in her 30s. Responders said it is unknown which injuries were from her initial fall and which were from the stairway collapse, but she is expected to survive.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
When someone is injured or killed in an accident through no fault of their own, they are typically able to seek financial recovery from the negligent party to mitigate the financial burdens they now face for medical treatment, lost income, property repairs, and many other economic and non-economic damages.
With a personal injury claim, victims can pursue damages for things such as lost wages, decreased earning capacity, medical bills, future medical bills, lifelong handicaps, pain and suffering, and diminished quality of life.
The primary advantage of a personal injury suit is that it enables victims or their surviving family members to collect compensation for pain and suffering, a benefit that is unavailable in a worker’s compensation claim.
The benefits available through worker’s compensation, which, at its essence, is nothing more than an agreement between business owners and their labor force, are extremely limited.
