Motor vehicle accidents take place every day in Utah. The most common causes of these accidents include:

  • Speeding: Driving faster than the posted speed limit is a leading cause of fatal Utah car accidents. More than 11,000 speed-related accidents took place across the state in 2016 producing more than 100 fatalities. To make sure you are operating your vehicle as safely as possible, always observe the speed limit and take into account traffic and road conditions.
  • Being Improperly Restrained: Seat belts have proven time and again that they save lives, but many Utah residents still can’t be bothered. Drivers who were not restrained when their accident took place comprised 50% of all car accident fatalities in the summer of 2016. in half of the fatal car accidents between June and August of 2016. Passengers and drivers who are not properly restrained are 25 times more likely to die in a crash.
  • Distracted Drivers: Distracted driving is the leading cause of motor vehicle collisions in the United States. Police have indicated that the issue of distracted driving is far more pervasive than records indicate because drivers are naturally reluctant to admit they were not paying attention to the roadway and the difficulties inherent in determining the cause of a crash.
