West Jordan, UT (October 17, 2021) – A motorcyclist died following an accident on Friday, October 15th near the intersection of 1300 West and 7000 South in West Jordan.

Reports show that at about 9:00 p.m., two motorcyclists were riding westbound on 7000 South when one of the bikes, a Harley Davidson, is thought to have been involved in an incident that caused it to strike a curb and skid across the road before possibly laying down the bike.

Police have not yet determined what happened and are investigating several possible factors.

The 64-year-old biker was transported by paramedics to Intermountain Medical Center where he passed away due to the severity of his injuries. His identity has not been released.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the second motorcyclist round a corner, abandon it down the block, and flee the scene on foot.

The second motorcyclist has not yet been located.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time.

Motorcycle Accidents in West Jordan

By the nature of its design, a motorcycle is an exhilarating form of travel but gives its riders practically no protection during a crash. Each year, throughout the United States, an estimated 2,000 people die in motorcycle accidents, and 50,000 more sustain significant physical injuries.

The majority of motorcycle accidents that result in fatalities or injuries involve another vehicle. They are most often due to a failure on the part of the other driver to be mindful of the motorcyclist’s presence on the roadway or to yield the right-of-way.

As reflected in recent data, nearly 80% of motorcycle accidents nationwide end in death or injury as opposed to just 20% of car accidents. In addition to this, the rate of fatal motorcycle accidents has been steadily increasing since 2003. The most recent statistics show a 55% increase.

Based on current trends, if a motorcyclist is hit by a motor vehicle, they are three times more likely to be critically injured and 14 times more predisposed to death than someone inside a passenger vehicle.
