Summit Co, UT (May 09, 2021) – The Summit County Sheriff’s Office responded to the site of an accident where a 72-year-old woman from Salt Lake County died when she was hit by a truck while riding her bicycle.
The crash occurred at about 10:20 a.m. on Friday, May 7th in Summit County when the driver of a pick-up truck towing a double axle trailer was turning into the driveway of a house on West Hoytsville Road.
The cyclist and her husband were riding their bikes in the opposite direction of the truck when she was hit. The husband, who was traveling several feet behind his wife, crashed his bike as he narrowly avoided being hit by the truck.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Both cyclists were wearing helmets at the time of the accident.
The driver was cited for failure to yield, and impairment is not believed to be a factor at this time.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that, in one recent year, nearly 129,000 people nationwide needed emergency room treatment and additional medical care for bicycle accident-related injuries. Moreover, 5,376 of those 129,000 eventually died due to their injuries.
Bicyclists are twice as likely to sustain mortal injuries after being involved in a traffic collision than the occupant of a vehicle. Those who survive must face a very arduous and costly road to recovery.
When victims are injured in accidents caused by the negligence of other drivers, it is crucial that they seek legal guidance from a skilled and knowledgeable bicycle accident attorney in Salt Lake City as soon as possible. When victims are harmed in collisions, through no fault of their own, they are often able to obtain compensation from wrongdoers to alleviate the financial costs they face for medical treatment, lost wages, property repairs, and a variety of other economic and non-economic damages.
