St. George, UT (May 31, 2022) – Three cars were involved in a collision and were subsequently towed from the scene on the evening of Tuesday, May 31st when sun glare allegedly caused a driver to fail to notice a red light at about 8:00 p.m.
An officer from the St. George Police Department said that a Honda passenger vehicle was traveling northbound along River Road. At that time, the light at the intersection of 2450 South and River Road was red.
Given the position of the sun at that time, the driver of the Honda was unable to see the color of the light and traveled into the intersection.
Westbound and eastbound traffic on 2450 South had a green light, so a Mercedes SUV also proceeded eastbound through the intersection as did a westbound Toyota 4-Runner.
As the Honda pulled into the intersection, it crashed into the side of the 4-Runner which spun out, striking the Mercedes.
A juvenile passenger inside the 4-Runner sustained a non-critical injury.
Two Gold Cross Ambulances were on the scene in addition to members of the St. George Fire Department and St. George Police Department.
The driver of the Honda received a citation for failing to obey a traffic signal and a learner’s permit violation.
The three vehicles were towed and the intersection was reopened in about an hour.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
