St. George, UT (November 26, 2021) – A motorcyclist was hospitalized with serious injuries on Tuesday, November 23rd during a collision with an SUV on Riverside Drive in St. George.

After the accident, a good Samaritan who pulled over to render aid had a heart attack and was also taken to the hospital.

Officials said that the accident took place at about 5:50 p.m. at the intersection of Foremaster Drive and Riverside Drive when a 36-year-old woman driving an SUV attempted to make a lefthand turn off of Riverside Drive onto Foremaster Drive.

Her SUV collided with a westbound motorcycle that was traveling straight through the intersection.

The collision caused the motorcyclist, an 18-year-old woman, to be thrown from the bike. She received a serious injury to one of her legs. A responding police officer applied a tourniquet in order to slow blood loss as they waited for paramedics to arrive.

Additionally, a man who stopped to help the teen underwent a heart attack and collapsed on the scene. Officers performed CPR on the man, who had no pulse for at least a minute before officers were able to revive him.

Both the motorcyclist and the good Samaritan were taken to St. George Regional Hospital by Gold Cross Ambulance.

The SUV driver was cited for failure to yield at an intersection.

Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.

Motorcycle Accidents in Utah

By the very nature of its design, a motorcycle provides its rider with an exciting mode of travel but offers almost no protection during an accident. Every year, across the country, an estimated 2,000 people die in motorcycle accidents. 50,000 more motorcyclists sustain harsh physical injuries due to these accidents.

An overwhelming majority of motorcycle accidents that end in death or injury involve another vehicle, such as a truck or car. They are most often caused by a failure on the part of the other driver to be aware of the motorcyclist’s presence on the roadway or to yield the right-of-way.

According to recent statistics, about 80% of motorcycle accidents in the United States result in death or injury compared to just 20% of car accidents. In addition to this, the rate of fatal motorcycle accidents has been steadily increasing since 2003. The most current statistics show a 55% increase.

Based on current trends, if a motorcyclist is struck by a car, they are three times more likely to be critically injured and 14 times more predisposed to being killed than someone inside a passenger vehicle.
