Vehicle Accidents in Utah

Motor vehicle collisions take place daily in Utah. The most frequent causes of these collisions include:

    • Failing to Use a Seat Belt: Seat belts absolutely save lives, but a lot of Utah residents still cannot be bothered. Drivers who are not properly restrained when their accident happened comprised half of all car accident deaths between June and August of 2016. Passengers and drivers who are improperly restrained have a 25 times greater chance of dying in an accident.
    • Inexperienced Drivers/Teenage Drivers: Statistics have revealed that teenage drivers are much more prone to being involved in car accidents. While the total number of vehicle crashes involving young drivers remains fairly constant throughout the year, the number of deadly accidents nearly doubles between May and June.
  • Disobeying the Speed Limit: Driving overly fast is a primary cause of deadly Utah car accidents. Over 11,000 speeding-related accidents took place throughout the state in 2016 causing more than 100 deaths. To make sure you are driving your car as safely as possible, always obey the speed limit and take into account road and traffic conditions.
  • Weekend Traffic/Holiday Traffic: The massive number of vehicles on Utah’s roadways contributes greatly to the state’s car crash rate. In the summer, Saturdays are the most dangerous day to be on the roadways, specifically from the afternoon into the evening.
  • Drivers Who Are Distracted: In Utah, driving while distracted is the leading cause of motor vehicle collisions. Police have suggested that the problem of distracted driving is much more widespread than their records reflect because drivers are usually unwilling to admit that they were not paying attention and because of the inherent struggles in determining the cause of any crash. Some  distracted driving includes:
    • Making and receiving telephone calls or reading text messages behind the wheel
    • Eating, drinking, or reaching for objects while driving
    • Adjusting the radio, seat settings, mirror settings, or Sat Nav
    • Being overly tired or fatigued
