Salt Lake City, UT (October 24, 2022) – A man sustained injuries when he was struck by a driver as he rode his scooter on Tuesday, October 18th at Ensign College.
The victim was on his way to class when he was hit inside a marked crosswalk in the area of State Street and 100 South near City Creek.
According to bystanders, the victim had the light indicating it was his turn to cross but before he reached the other side of the street, a driver struck him and then fled the scene.
The victim, an adult male, had an injured leg as well as numerous contusions and lacerations.
Although the incident is being investigated as a hit-and-run, police have located the vehicle and identified the driver.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Without the safety of a metal cage, or, in actuality, any safety features whatsoever, to shield them from the impending impact, pedestrian injuries are often followed by severe economic, emotional, and physical ramifications.
In Utah, there are numerous local and state laws that govern when and how pedestrians can use the roadways. These laws are developed with the safety of those on foot in mind.
If a pedestrian is inside a crosswalk, the onus of responsibility is placed on drivers to slow down and yield the right of way. Due to the significant difference between the weight and size of a motor vehicle and the weight and size of a body, motor vehicles are required to defer to pedestrians under almost any circumstances.
Although intersections are considered pedestrian areas, not every intersection has a marked crosswalk. An intersection is supposed to be a safe and suitable place for a pedestrian to cross the roadway.
Some intersections, however, such as ones with above-average speed limits, in large cities or other highly-populated areas, are usually equipped with bridges or skyways that offer safe passage for those on scooters, bicycles, and foot.
