Ogden, UT (January 18, 2022) – One person was killed on Tuesday, January 18th when the car they were riding in left the roadway and crashed into cement barriers at the intersection of 21st Street and 200 West.

A spokesperson from the Ogden Police Department said that a car carrying a driver and two passengers was traveling westbound along 21st Street when it went off the road, collided with the cement barriers, smashed through a chain-link fence, and came to an uncontrolled stop in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart.

The passenger in the back seat was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, who has since been identified as 25-year-old Ulises Chavez, was taken into custody. In addition to having multiple outstanding warrants, Chavez is facing potential charges of felony automobile homicide, driving under the influence, interlock ignition device, and alcohol-restricted driver.

No additional details have been released as the accident is still under investigation.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time.

Drunk Driving Accidents in Utah

In 2018 and 2019, the state’s rate of drunk driving arrests fell by 4%. Most of these drivers were arrested in Salt Lake, Davis, Weber, and Utah counties, which altogether accounts for 70% of Utah’s DUI arrests. Every remaining county outside of Wasatch Front together made up just 30% of the state’s DUI accidents, a total that is disproportionate to the area’s population.

Just like other kinds of auto accidents, fault on the part of the inebriated driver must be established in order for you to successfully pursue financial compensation for your losses which, in a DUI claim, may include both economic and non-economic damages.

In very few cases, punitive damages may also be awarded provided that the driver exhibited gross negligence in their decision to drive drunk.
