New Harmony, UT (May 13, 2022) – A driver was taken to an area hospital after a collision forced her car off the roadway and into a ditch on Friday, May 13th in New Harmony.

The incident took place at about 12:00 p.m. in the westbound lanes of Old Highway 144 close to a Shell gas station near Interstate 15.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Sergeant said that the car ended up in a steep drainage ditch, stuck on its side, with its front end crushed into a large metal culvert pipe.

The driver, a woman in her 60s, was trapped inside the vehicle following the collision and had to be extricated by rescue crews.

Emergency Medical Technicians, Harmony Valley Fire District firefighters, and two sheriff’s deputies from Washington County were able to free the woman from the vehicle and move her up to the roadway. She was treated for a suspected broken leg and several other injuries, none of which are believed to be life-threatening.

She was then transported by Gold Cross Ambulance to St. George Regional Hospital for additional medical treatment.

The cause of the crash is under investigation as deputies were unable to speak to the victim at the scene due to her condition.

Traffic was re-routed into a single lane for the hour it took responders to clear the scene.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.

Injury Accidents in Utah

Motor vehicle accidents commonly leave victims with debilitating, critical, and even potentially fatal injuries. Some forms of injuries that often result from Utah car crashes include:

  • Head and Back Injuries: Back injuries are a typical product of vehicle accidents and could lead to nerve damage, a herniated disc, or paralysis. Crash victims might also experience permanent pain, tingling, or numbness in their extremities.

A head injury is a very serious collision-related injury. Motorists who are restrained by a seat belt can smack their heads on a deployed airbag, the steering column, or even the dashboard. The powerful force of the impact can lead to concussions and other, more severe forms of brain injury. Victims could endure the consequences of changes in their cognitive abilities, mental confusion, hearing damage or loss, and damage to or loss of their eyesight.

  • Chest and Neck Injuries: Whiplash is the most notorious and most common vehicular crash injury. It is caused by the sharp and unexpected movement of the neck or head resulting in tearing and other damage to the ligaments and muscles. Whiplash injuries range from relatively inconsequential to quite serious. In some instances, injured victims experience paralysis of their vocal cord following an accident.

Blunt force trauma, another common collision injury, can affect the chest of victims with pre-existing heart problems, sending them into cardiac arrest. Punctured or collapsed lungs, broken ribs, internal bleeding, and internal organ damage are other injury scenarios that often accompany serious vehicle accidents.

  • Other Kinds of Injuries: Accident victims frequently receive injuries to their extremities (hands, feet, arms, or legs). Injuries to the extremities typically include torn ligaments, such as the ACL, fractured or broken bones, and even bisection and amputation. Many of these injuries can leave victims permanently disabled and with a diminished quality of life.
