Losing Lisa

Death is natural. It happens to everyone. Yet, we hear cases every day where someone dies because they did not receive the help they needed. In this case, Lisa Marie Osler was 37-years young when she died as an inmate at the Salt Lake County Jail. Lisa was being held in jail in advance of a court date for drug charges. Her parents state that Lisa became addicted to painkillers after the gastric bypass surgery. As a result, she developed Crohn’s disease. When Lisa lost her insurance she was unable to get her pain medication which led her to use heroin. As she was in jail, the guards were notified that Lisa needs medication for several medical issues including Crohn’s disease. Before she was arrested and sent to jail, Lisa had gastric bypass surgery. She spent a total of four days in jail before she died from an infection in her intestines from the surgery.

Inmates who were near Lisa gave testimony that Lisa was in writhing pain. She asked constantly for help but the guards ignored her. Because she was picked up for drug charges, the guards assumed she was going through withdrawals even though she had a medical history and was required to take medication. Other inmates stated that Lisa did not eat or drink for two days. Lisa was showing clear signs of an emergency, but the guards chose to ignore her while she was going through excruciating pain. One even asked her if she felt like dying because of the drug withdrawal.

Lisa’s wrongful death lawsuit is asking for damages for the suffering of Lisa’s parents, family distress, attorney fees, and other losses. In Lisa’s death, she leaves behind three children: 7, 12 and 14. The family has a strong case as there is evidence of neglect.
